Mauricio Pochettino will oversee Chelsea FC’s final game of the 2023/24 season as they host Bournemouth on Sunday lunchtime. Currently sixth in the Premier League, a win would see Chelsea conclude the season on a strong note.
However, the Blues have a chance to finish above Tottenham Hotspur if Spurs lose to Sheffield United, which would allow Chelsea to secure fifth place. For a significant part of the season, the West Londoners were stuck in 10th spot, but a late resurgence has seen them climb up the table.
Chelsea are currently unbeaten in their last four games and will look to extend that streak to five with a victory over the Cherries at Stamford Bridge. Despite this positive run, Pochettino will likely still see room for improvement, regardless of whether the Blues finish fifth or sixth in the league. Ending the season on a high note will be crucial for building momentum into the next campaign.
In his latest remark, he has called out that finishing sixth or fifth is not something Chelsea should celebrate and further said via Fabrizio Romano on X:
“We’re not going to celebrate and take a picture finishing 5th or 6th and Europe. It’s not enough for the club, the owners, the sporting directors, or the players. It’s not enough for us.”.
For a team like Chelsea, which thrives on winning trophies, finishing fifth or sixth is not a huge accomplishment. The club has not won a trophy in the last two seasons, which is a significant drought by their standards. Hopefully, we return to that perch in the coming years.
Winning trophies is what truly matters. To achieve success next season, we need to ensure that everything is in control. This includes making smart signings, implementing the manager’s preferred playing system effectively, and performing strongly in preseason. Only by addressing these aspects can Chelsea start the following term on a stronger footing and compete at the highest level.
Emphasizing better signings is crucial for our future success. Without adding experienced players and a reliable striker to our squad, we’ll struggle to compete with the top sides consistently. By strengthening strategically in these areas, we can build a title-challenging team that’s capable of achieving our goals.
