The Spanish international and Chelsea defender Marc Cucurella says that Chelsea should not make excuses about their young team after their poor performances this season.
On Saturday, they traveled to Aston Villa, where they ought to have won all three points. Chelsea trailed 2-0 after a subpar first-half performance. But still, they managed to dominate in the second half, getting away with a 2-2 draw.
Given how uneven Chelsea has been this season, the disparity in quality between the two halves was probably very normal. With just five games remaining in the season, Chelsea may still make it into the Europa League with a strong finish.
There have been certain allegations since a few weeks ago, with the boss Pochettino himself accusing the Chelsea squad of not having enough maturity and leadership quality, which is resulting in inconsistency and continuous losses.
Due to these constant allegations, left-back Marc Cucurella insists that Chelsea should not repeatedly blame the young Blues squad for their poor outcomes in the matches. Cucurella said (h/t Evening Standard) :
“A lot of the games we don’t win and that is part of the game but I think it is more the whole problem because we have the quality and maybe we don’t show what we can do. In the first half, we did not understand the game and suffered a little bit. But we showed we have the quality and the spirit to play and fight together”
“We are a young team, but that is not an excuse because we showed we have the quality. We played against the team sitting fourth in the League, and we dominated the game. But we need to maintain this level for every minute of every game. If we stay this way, we can do a lot of good things.”
Although it is understandable that, being a 22-year-old, Cucurella is frustrated by the constant young team allegations, this might actually be somewhat the case. Since Todd Boehly took over the ownership of Chelsea, his transfer strategy has always been to bring in youngsters, keeping in mind the future of the club.
Since Todd Boehly’s era, Chelsea has been spending billions of dollars without getting the expected results, which is quite evidence of the fact that balance is important in every team. There must be a few experienced players among the youngsters on every team who could guide the young stars into becoming future leaders.
After the departure announcement of Thiago Silva, Chelsea will be without a leader, so they need to play it smart while finding a successor for Silva and bring someone who could match Silva’s experience, leadership, and skill level.
Chelsea currently sits in ninth place in the Premier League standings. Their defender, Marc Cucurella, is hopeful that if they still manage their form, they could end this season positively with some chances to qualify for the European competition.
