Manchester City legend Sergio Aguero almost joined Chelsea before his eventual move to Manchester

Man City icon Sergio Aguero recently revealed an intriguing twist in his footballing journey, disclosing that Chelsea had expressed interest in signing him during his time at Atletico Madrid. Despite his iconic moment of securing City’s first Premier League title in 2012, Aguero disclosed that Chelsea had shown initial interest in him after a memorable performance against them in November 2009.

Speaking to The Club, here is what Aguero had to say:

“Yeah, two goals against Chelsea. I started in the second half, I [scored] two goals. One was a volley and the other was a free-kick.”

“After that game – maybe two months after – my agent said to me: ‘Chelsea is interested.’”

“I had [spent] just three years at Atletico Madrid but me, I love the Premier League, [I wanted] to play there, but Chelsea never showed interest after that.”

Aguero’s revelation offers a fascinating insight into the intricacies of football transfers and the paths not taken in players’ careers. While Aguero ultimately found immense success at Manchester City, winning numerous trophies and etching his name in the club’s history books, his journey could have taken a different trajectory had Chelsea pursued their interest in him. Imagine a striker duo of Didier Drogba and Sergio Aguero. WOWZERS.

Manchester City legend Sergio Aguero almost joined Chelsea before his eventual move to Manchester.

Just imagine for a moment, if Chelsea had pursued their interest. Aguero, with his clinical finishing and lightning pace, alongside Lampard’s midfield mastery, Drogba’s brute force up top, and Terry’s defensive solidity—what a sight that would’ve been on the Stamford Bridge pitch.

Aguero’s legacy in English football is already etched in stone, but those what-ifs keep us fans buzzing. What if Chelsea had made that move? Would Aguero have become a Chelsea legend like he did at City? Would he have lifted the same trophies, and scored the same iconic goals? It’s a proper head-scratcher. Could’ve won the UCL.

And let’s not forget the impact Aguero could’ve had on the Premier League as a whole if he’d ended up at Chelsea. But it wasn’t meant to be. His goal-scoring prowess is the stuff of legend. He could’ve been tearing up defences left, right, and centre, becoming one of the all-time greats in the league’s history. He’s all of that, but not in Chelsea colours.

What could have been in Sergio Aguero wore a different shade of blue.

But in the end, it is what it is. His biographies will read Man City hero and not a Chelsea superstar.
