Chelsea goalie Dorde Petrovic says he wants his side to secure European qualification for next season and will be happy to play in any European competition. The Blues are eight on the table and will host West Ham United today at lunchtime.
And a win could see them climb to sixth spot if Manchester United suffer a defeat against Crystal Palace on Monday night. However, Chelsea could also secure a UEFA Conference League spot if they finish seventh in the table.
With a few matches remaining, the club will hope to secure a better spot next season. Their 2-0 win against Tottenham Hotspur on Thursday highlighted how the Blues overcame the predicament after a 5-0 defeat to Arsenal and a 2-2 draw against Aston Villa.
Petrovic, who has occupied the No. 1 spot, has been excellent between the sticks and will hope to lead his side to a win against the Hammers. He is eyeing a European spot next season, (h/t Mirror), speaking to reporters ahead of the game, he said:
“We also played a semi-final in the FA Cup. We have a lot of young players and players playing at this level for the first time. We are not happy with that. We want to play in the Champions League; we want to take trophies. That is the history of this club. But I can say that it’s a success if we play in the Europa League next year.”
Petrovic comments highlight how better we have been this season, deserved to win the Carabao Cup final, and should have reached the final of the FA Cup. But now our only ambition is to secure a European spot next season.
Chelsea should finish higher up the table to claim a European spot next season because, when we see it, our team will be even better for the European matches. This young squad needs to experience mid-week travels in Europe; it will prepare them for the Champions League. If they can survive Thursday games, they can surely handle Tuesday or Wednesday games.
As a major club, we are unable to prevent it, but it will have a significant impact on the team, particularly if the injuries persist. It’s better for Chelsea and the younger players if we get used to it sooner rather than later.
