Chelsea star makes provisional squad for 2024 Euros despite mixed season

Chelsea fullback Marc Cucurella receive call-up for Spain provisional squad ahead of Euro 2024

As per Fabrizio Romano, Chelsea fullback Marc Cucurella has been called up for the Spain squad ahead of Euro 2024. Spanish manager Luis de la Fuente announced the provisional squad today, and the Blues player deservingly got called by the Spain head coach.

Cucurella rediscovered his form in the second half of the season and had a meaningful impact as Chelsea finished sixth in the Premier League under departing Mauricio Pochettino. His performance might have impressed the Spain head coach, and the full-back will have a chance to represent Spain in Euro 2024.

However, Cucurella’s time at Chelsea hasn’t been all sunshine, as, since his big-money move to Chelsea, the 25-year-old has suffered from poor form and endured plenty of injuries, which kept him out of Spain squad for this year’s friendlies and additionally the 2022 FIFA World Cup.

This season as well, the full-back wasn’t at his best and suffered a dip in form. He then picked up an ankle injury in December and was out until March, but since his return, he has shown massive improvement in his performance and has become an important player under Pochettino.

Cucurella not only showed his attributes from left-back but was also shifted to midfield and showed great composure when Pochettino played him as an inverted left-back at the club. The former Brighton & Hove Albion player has earned his call-up for the tournament thanks to his performance.

After the full-back’s dreadful performance in the previous season, Pochettino facilitated him to turn things around and quickly won over the fans. Now, as Spain prepares to compete in Euro 2024, he will be attempting to preserve his strong form.

Spain made it to the semifinals in 2020, and with more youthful talent on the rise, they’ll be a force to be reckoned with in 2024.
