A View From The Bridge

How Chelsea stand to profit from Eden Hazard even after former Real Madrid star’s retirement

Chelsea set to receive major financial aid from Real Madrid from Eden Hazard

Chelsea will pocket a tidy £5m bonus from the transfer of Eden Hazard to Real Madrid, a deal that continues to pay dividends despite the Belgian’s retirement from football seven months ago.

That is as per The Telegraph. Hazard’s move to Real in 2019 was a lucrative one for Chelsea, fetching a hefty £130m package with substantial add-ons linked to performance. This comes as a result of Real’s progress to the Champions League final (where they shall face Borussia Dortmund), a feat that triggers bonuses agreed upon in the initial transfer.

Despite bidding farewell to the pitch last summer and announcing his retirement in October, Hazard‘s transfer terms remain in effect. The termination of his contract with Real did not nullify the clauses negotiated upon his departure from Stamford Bridge.

Chelsea set to receive major financial aid from Real Madrid from Eden Hazard.

Sure, a fiver might not sound like much in today’s crazy transfer market, but every little helps, especially when clubs like Chelsea are playing by the Premier League’s profit and sustainability rules.

Hazard’s move to Madrid has always been seen as a bit of genius business. Chelsea cashed in big time upfront, raking in about £88m for the Belgian maestro, who was 28 at the time.

The rest of the dosh saw itself tied to Real’s success on the pitch. And while Hazard’s time in Spain saw itself blighted by injuries and bench time, Chelsea’s still reaping the rewards of Real’s achievements. Can’t complain at all. Two different players though; the Hazard that was at Chelsea and the one that was at Madrid. Glad we got the best out of him during his time at SB.

Eden was far from it at Madrid. The weight of the #7.

In retrospect, Chelsea can reflect on Hazard’s transfer as a triumph, both financially and in terms of on-field success. Two Premier League titles and two Europa League wins in his seven years in London speak volumes about his impact.
