Ruben Amorim has conceded that he will continue at Sporting CP for next season after being linked with a managerial job at Chelsea and West Ham United. The Portuguese manager also travelled to London to hold talks with the Hammers, but things never got close.
Mauricio Pochettino’s future at Chelsea continues to be up in the air, and the Blues seem to be taking time with their next manager target. Even with a severely depleted roster and no experienced players, Pochettino has managed to do a respectable job, and the club’s board ought to make note of the progress made under the Argentine manager.
However, the Argentine will continue to walk on thin ice, and Chelsea will have to look elsewhere after Amorim confirmed he will continue at Sporting and also explained his talks with the Hammers, (h/t Evening Standard), Speaking on Friday ahead of Sporting’s game with Portimonense, he said:
“Everything that needs to be said has already been said. You’ve already created your theories. I don’t have any problems. You stick with your ideas. I’m not going to say why [he went to London].’’
“I have already told those who need to know, especially [sporting director] Hugo Viana. I’ll continue forward. I saw that [Vitoria manager] Alvaro [Pacheco] has also had problems with a dinner recently! I guess it’s fashionable to talk about coaches, or talk about clubs that fire coaches, and then the next day you link another one.”
Amorim has fired shots at those who were spreading rumours that he was going to sign with West Ham. Since he has stated that he will stay at Sporting, many clubs have taken notice of his work at the Portuguese club, and he is now receiving the recognition he deserves for turning Sporting into a top team this campaign.
Chelsea would be better served by sticking with Pochettino in the interim. We’ve given him the entire season to prove his mettle against an inexperienced squad beset with injuries. We are now in eighth place in the league thanks to his outstanding play, and we are only three points off of sixth place.
Considering how much he struggled with a disjointed squad, it makes his work at Chelsea even more admirable. He most definitely deserves to manage the West Londoners for another season.
