A View From The Bridge

We are working on staying”- Chelsea loanee’s father drops bombshell update on summer exit

Chelsea loanee Ian Maatsen’s dad wants his son to remain at Borussia Dortmund

The Chelsea board is facing intense criticism following comments from Ian Maatsen’s father, Edward Maatsen, who expressed his desire for his son to secure a permanent move to Borussia Dortmund next season. Chelsea’s recent performance has been nothing short of disastrous under the stewardship of Todd Boehly and company.

Despite ambitious plans to sign young players, the club finds itself languishing in ninth place in the table, struggling to secure victories under manager Mauricio Pochettino. It is fair to say that the campaign has been rather underwhelming.

Adding to their woes, Chelsea is currently under financial scrutiny by the Premier League, facing the possibility of fines if they fail to generate profit in the upcoming transfer window. This financial pressure has led the club to offload players, with Ian Maatsen and Armando Broja among those already loaned out.

Chelsea are open to selling Maatsen next season, and his release clause is thought to be around €35–40 million. Now Maatsen’s dad hopes that his son joins the German club on a long-term deal after he told Voetbal International:

‘‘Things are not going well at Chelsea since they changed ownership. A lot at that club also revolves around money, which sometimes seems more important than the club’s interests. We are working on staying at the club [Dortmund]’’

It’s understandable that Maatsen’s father is frustrated, as he likely hoped his son would have the opportunity to play for Chelsea. However, Pochettino’s decision not to utilize Maatsen in the Premier League due to concerns about his height and defensive abilities has led to this situation. Chelsea are now willing to sell the left-back, and they have set a price that Dortmund should have no trouble meeting.

An excellent player, Maatsen will play later tonight in the UEFA Champions League semifinal for Dortmund against Paris Sain-Germain. The fact that the younger is capable of making an impact at that level showcases the talent that the Blues failed to hand an opportunity to. Should he end up moving elsewhere and upping his game, the Blues have only themselves to blame.

Todd Boehly’s vision for Chelsea represents a departure from Roman Abramovich’s approach, aiming to establish a distinct identity for the club. While the focus on young talent is part of this strategy, there are challenges associated with relying solely on inexperienced players.

Achieving success often requires a blend of seasoned veterans and emerging talents to create a balanced squad capable of competing at the highest level. Balancing youth with experience will be crucial as Chelsea seeks to build a sustainable and successful team under the new ownership.
