A View From The Bridge

Chelsea have identified shot-stopper reinforcement having turned their attentions to Portugal goalie

Chelsea revive their interest in signing Porto goalkeeper Diogo Costa

According to journalist Rudy Galetti, Porto goalkeeper Diogo Costa has been approached by Chelsea, who are still keen on signing the goalkeeper after failing to sign him last summer. Chelsea instead went to bring Roberto Sanchez and Dorde Petrovic and sent Arrizabalaga Kepa on loan.

The Spanish goalkeeper is set to return to the club after Real Madrid ruled out his signing. Meanwhile, Sanchez and Petrovic seem to have not lived up to the standard. The former Brighton & Hove goalie struggled to make a difference between the sticks.

Meanwhile, Petrovic took Sanchez’s spot after he suffered an injury. Until the end of the season, the Serbian goalkeeper was Mauricio Pochettino’s No. 1 choice, as the Blues finished sixth in the Premier League table.

Now that the Blues have appointed Enzo Maresca as their new head coach, the club is planning to bring in a new goalkeeper who will fit into the Italian system and play from the back. Maresca wants a custodian who helps with build-up and acts as a player instead of a sweeper-keeper.

Costa is one of the top-rated goalkeepers and boasts excellent qualities. Chelsea have lacked a goalkeeper who possesses excellent distribution skills, which Petrovic hasn’t been good at. The Blues will be able to get their man. Porto are open to selling the goalkeeper for a satisfactory price.

Costa is one of the best passers and the data shows the Portuguese recorded the most passes around 1034 with an 84.8% passing accuracy in the Portuguese league this season.

Costa will be a great fit for Chelsea, especially for Maresca, who is keen to have a goalkeeper with great distribution skills. But if Blues hopes to sign him, they will have to free up some space as Kepa returns in the summer. The West Londoners will have three goalies.

They will have to make a decision on the future of Sanchez and Kepa, who have not shown why they deserve to be here. Sanchez has mainly struggled this campaign, while Petrovic has shown signs of improvement and will be a great backup if we sign Costa.
