According to the Telegraph (subscription required), Chelsea directors Paul Winstanley and Laurence Stewart are in safe hands at the club as the Blues prepare for an end-of-season review. However, Mauricio Pochettino’s seasons will be assessed after the final match of the campaign.
Winstanley and Stewart will once again be in charge of the Blues recruitment process in the summer window, as the club will look to sign a forward, left-back, and central defender. The goalkeeping position may also be looked at.
However, both the Blues staff have come under constant criticism for their way of hiring last summer, as the Blues went through a complete overhaul of the squad and only signed players under the age of 25.
This has been the main reason for the club’s inconsistency this campaign, as the Blues struggled to sustain their winning run, but currently, they are on a three-game winning run and hope to secure a European spot next season.
Chelsea are seventh in the Premier League and are points equal with Newcastle United. If the Blues go on to win the last two of their matches, then the Europa League spot is achievable. This summer, the club will have to make a big decision in their recruitment process, and the good thing is that both Winstanley and Stewart will get help from Sam Jewell.
In order to start the upcoming season strong, the Blues will need to carefully evaluate the current campaign before making any decisions. A lot needs to change.
If the club wishes to keep Pochettino for the upcoming season, they will need to make some important decisions about his future. And if they choose to keep him, they ought to give the Argentine input in the summer roster decisions and add a few more seasoned players to assist the team add more balance.
Next season, we will have to bring silverware, so the Blues board will have to make sure that this time they build a squad challenging for every trophy possible, as we have now gone two campaigns without a trophy.
