Chelsea might be eyeing up a potential swoop for Liverpool’s Darwin Nunez. You might remember the lad; he was on our radar back in 2022 before he dashed off to Anfield in a whirlwind of red. Fast forward to today, and the rumour mill suggests he might just fancy a change of scenery. But should Chelsea be biting at the bait?
Let’s break it down. Nunez, the Uruguayan hitman, has had a bit of a rollercoaster ride up on Merseyside. On paper, his stats don’t scream “flop” – 33 goals and 17 assists in 94 appearances ain’t half bad. But there’s this lingering sense that he’s not quite hit the heights expected of him.
According to journalist Neil Jones, if Liverpool were to wave goodbye to Nunez, there’d be a queue of suitors longer than a Saturday night at the local chippy. Chelsea, ever the opportunist, are reportedly sniffing around again, reminiscing about what could’ve been.
Here is what Jones noted in his Daily Briefing exclusive [subscription required]:
“But were Liverpool to look to sell, then I would expect considerable interest. Chelsea enquired about Nunez a year ago, and his reputation across Europe is still strong enough to ensure there would be clubs willing to take the plunge on him. He has the raw ability to be a very good centre-forward, and his ability to get himself into goalscoring positions so regularly means there will be lots of clubs and lots of coaches who will believe that they can be the one to unlock his true potential.”
However, Chelsea have an in-house Darwin. Nicolas Jackson. 16 goals, six assists in 41 appearances this season. Now, Jackson’s been a bit of a mixed bag since his arrival, with critics quick to pounce on his inconsistency in front of goal. However, recent performances suggest he might just be finding his stride. Mauricio Pochettino might want to give the lad a chance to prove his worth before potentially splashing the cash on Nunez.
Liverpool won’t let Nunez go for peanuts. So, is it worth breaking the bank for a player who’s yet to truly set the Premier League alight? Some might argue yes – after all, he’s got that raw talent oozing. But others might advocate for a more pragmatic approach; trust in what we’ve got or hunt for cheaper, yet equally effective options.
The solution is as simple as it can get. We cannot have two Nunezes in one team. We have to work on getting the best out of Jackson, and if we fail in that pursuit, then go into the transfer market, looking for suitable options. Nevertheless, the current focus should be securing any form of European football so that Poch stays in his job. Let’s focus on that.
So, where does that leave us? Well, it’s anyone’s guess. Pochettino and the powers that be will no doubt be weighing up their options as we speak.
