Borussia Dortmund have decided to retain Chelsea loanee Ian Maatsen for another season

As per Fabrizio Romano, Borussia Dortmund are keen to keep Chelsea loanee Ian Maatsen beyond this season after the left-back impressed the club with his exploits this season. The fullback’s performance in the second leg of the Champions League quarterfinal against Atletico Madrid further cemented his place at the club.

If Dortmund wants to make a long-term move, then they will have to meet the Blues’ £35 million buy-out clause in the summer transfer window. And now the German club hopes to keep the 22-year-old, but they will first have to learn their budget for next season in order to make a move permanent for him.

Maatsen arrived at Dortmund in January, as his first half of the season at Chelsea appeared bleak after the fullback barely got minutes on the pitch. Moving somewhere else was the only wise option for the player to continue his development.

Dortmund presented the chance, and the Blues academy player didn’t think twice before accepting a move. Since his transfer there, he has already become a popular figure, and his goal against Atletico Madrid has further solidified his position at the club.

His addition to the club has turned Dortmund into a Champions League team, where they will face Paris Saint-Germain in the semi-final today and will hope to continue their ambitions of reaching the final.

Dortmund wants to keep Ian Maatsen beyond this season.

Meanwhile, the West Londoners will hope to generate some revenue if the German club decides to make a permanent move for the fullback. The Blues loaned Maatsen for financial reasons, and there are other academy players such as Conor Gallagher and Armando Broja who could be shown the exit gate to help the club economically.

Dortmund has been enthused with Maatsen’s ability and now are interested in keeping the fullback. However, given Chelsea’s £35 million buy-out clause, it’s unclear if Dortmund’s financial position will enable them to keep the fullback for another season.
