Why was Malo Gusto not in Chelsea squad for Sheffield United clash? Report explains reason

Chelsea fullback Malo Gusto didn’t travel with the squad as he was rested in Chelsea’s 2-2 draw with Sheffield United

According to Football.London, Malo Gusto didn’t travel with the squad in the Chelsea 2-2 draw with Sheffield United, as the fullback was rested and Axel Disas started the game as a right-back.

Ever since the injury to Reece James, Gusto has occupied the spot and become the preferred choice under Mauricio Pochettino. The 20-year-old has gotten better with each game and seems to have upgraded his attributes.

However since Pochettino has no backup right-back alternative this season, his overuse has made him appear clumsy in the games. Therefore, the Argentine manager decided to use Disasi and rest the fullback before the Sheffield match.

Disasi performed admirably in the match because his strengths centre around defence rather than offence because, in the present game, fullbacks must be able to both defend and attack, which was always going to be an extremely challenging position for the Frenchman.

But rest for Gusto was needed because he was limping against Manchester United, and had Pochettino played the Frenchman, he would have certainly suffered an injury in the Sheffield game.

Hopefully, he will start the game fresh, and now that we have Alfie Gilchrist, who can play right-back, the Argentine manager should start rotating the right-back position.

Malo Gusto has five assists in the Premier League this season.

James’ return seems improbable this season, so it will be wise to now rotate Gusto with Gilchrist or Disasi. We cannot overdependent on the same player during the games, which has been the case with Cole Palmer and Gusto, who need rest to avoid picking injuries.

Gusto is only 21 years old, which makes his abilities even more remarkable. His game is only becoming better. Of course, he can still do better, and the more experience he gets, the greater his potential. If we take proper treatment of him, he has the potential to develop into a world-class right-back.
