A View From The Bridge

Surprise sack can’t be ruled out as Chelsea contact 41-year-old manager despite Mauricio Pochettino planning talks for next season

There is still a possibility of a surprise sack as Chelsea keeps tabs on the 41-year-old boss, Thiago Motta, despite Mauricio Pochettino plans for talks over future

Chelsea has begun enquiring about possible Mauricio Pochettino successors around Europe, with the manager’s sack remaining a possibility. Reports state that despite Pochettino starting conversations about the future, the team has already been in touch with one target, Thiago Motta.

Chelsea has had several difficulties this season; the Blues are now without a title and are fighting to secure a berth in Europe before the season ends. Fans have been very critical of this, and some are rooting for changes to the dugout.

The Blues board wants to ensure that they don’t fire another manager too soon from their long-term goal to return the team to the pinnacle of English football. While some Chelsea personnel are eager to see changes, there is a deeper desire to see the project through to completion and allow the Argentinian more time to bolster the team until the end of the season.

A surprise sack could not be ruled out

According to the Telegraph, Mauricio Pochettino is ready to open talks over which players Chelsea should retain next season, with players and staff fighting for futures in the final stretch of the Premier League campaign.

Despite the boss considering the club’s future, the Chelsea board is keen to look for his potential replacement. According to recent reports, the staff has already made contact with one of their targets, Thiago Motta. Although Motta already has an agreement with Juventus to take over from Max Allegri at the end of the season.

In his brief management career, Motta has made an impression, most recently at Serie A’s Bologna. Bologna is now in fourth place in the standings and is expected to make it into the Champions League the following year because of Motta’s aggressive style of play.

Pochettino’s future remains uncertain

However, Marc Cucurella highlighted the team’s position following their 2-2 draw with Aston Villa, saying, “When we lose 5-0, I don’t think the manager can do anything.” Chelsea’s players are eager for the Argentine to stay in charge.

After just one season in command, it doesn’t seem probable that Chelsea will fire Pochettino. There have been indications of development among a young team that is still developing and adjusting to Premier League football, even though things may not have gone as the leadership would have liked thus far.

However, the continuous moves from Chelsea’s’s board to look for manager replacements could certainly be an indication that we do not know what could come for the boss in future. A surprise sack of Pochettino certainly remains a possibility. The final results would come to light only at the end of the season.
