Mauricio Pochettino dismissed any concerns about an injury to Chelsea star Cole Palmer during the match against Manchester City. The Argentine manager clarified that Palmer was simply fatigued, and the medical team would evaluate his condition.
Despite dominating the game, the Blues once again fell short against City in the FA Cup semi-final, losing 1-0. Chelsea had numerous opportunities to secure victory but failed to capitalize on their chances.
Bernardo Silva, who had previously missed a crucial penalty in their Champions League quarterfinal defeat to Real Madrid, redeemed himself by scoring the winning goal for City in the 84th minute. His goal secured City’s place in the final of the FA Cup.
Palmer, who was limping at the start of the game, came close to scoring a goal, but Stefan Ortega saved his effort. The 21-year-old was unable to summon enough energy to weather his team’s defeat. Later on, Palmer seemed to have had an injury, but Pochettino addressed it during the post-game press conference., where he said via Football.London:
“It’s normal. He’s tired. But I don’t believe he has a problem. We need to check tomorrow, but I hope there’s nothing more wrong than him being tired.”
Given his significant contributions in crucial games, it’s no surprise that Palmer may be feeling the strain. He’s been a standout performer for Chelsea, often stepping up when needed most. While he may have struggled against City, his absence wasn’t the sole reason for our loss. Even without him, we had opportunities to secure victory, but missed chances from players like Nicolas Jackson proved costly.
Fatigue is certainly a major issue and we should avoid risking burning out our best players. A lot will, however, depend on how Pochettino can use the squad in rotation. As long as the rest of the squad also perform to the expected levels, Chelsea can afford to rotate the players, giving them the rest when needed.
Palmer’s impressive goal tally of 20 in the league speaks volumes about his impact on the team. He’s been a consistent performer, elevating our results whenever he’s on the pitch. His absence would undoubtedly pose a challenge for us, as he’s been a key figure in our success this season. Perhaps his current state is more fatigue-related than an actual injury.
