Mauricio Pochettino’s latest verdict on Chelsea’s ambition for European competition won’t go down well with the players after he said the club doesn’t deserve to be in the tournament if they continue to play like they did against Arsenal.
The 5-0 hammering appeared to be a final nail in the coffin for the players and Pochettino, who are now facing the extreme wrath of the fans, and the supporters haven’t been sold on the Blues hierarchy’s aspirations, thus the board has also come under fire for how they execute projects.
However, now the board would expect the club to secure a European tournament next season with six games left, but the matches coming up won’t make it easy for Pochettino to claim a spot in the European competition.
When Blues plays Aston Villa on Saturday night, the former head coach of Tottenham Hotspur will hope his side bounces back. But if they play as they did against Arsenal, he believes his team doesn’t deserve to reach European competition. In an interview with the BBC, he added:
“Now it is difficult to see the future because, after this game, we feel disappointed. It is difficult to talk about objectives. If we compete like Saturday, OK. But if we compete like today, do I think we deserve to go to Europe? I think in this way, no.”
Our fate for the European competition next season will undoubtedly be determined by the games we have left to play—Aston Villa, Tottenham, and Brighton—so it is certain that we will not be able to qualify if we lose against them. Arsenal handed us the most humiliating defeat in a North London Derby since 1980, which is enough to highlight our performance If we continue to play like that then this season will be the same as last campaign.
We have a chance to change the mood around when we play the Villains, who have been in terrific form, and they will not make it easy for us to win the game. We defeated them earlier in the season, and we can do it again if we play collectively and don’t repeat the same mistakes we did against the Gunners.
