Mauricio Pochettino highlighted the key areas where Chelsea are lacking in their development after a disappointing 2-2 draw with Sheffield United last evening. A win could have seen the Blues move further up the table, but their lack of maturity in the match saw them settle for a point.
The Argentine pointed out the Blues’ problem and conceded that his side still isn’t mature enough to compete in such games and scrape out wins. One can agree with Pochettino’s point because the way we have played against teams who are below us questions our ability to win matches.
It was a big chance for the Blues to build on Thursday’s momentous stoppage-time comeback win over Manchester United at Sheffield United, but their inability to remain consistent backfired once again. And Pochettino revealed why the club cannot consistently scrape out positive results. Speaking to Sky Sports, he said:
“Maybe [it is] because this group is not mature enough to compete in games every three days.”
We can agree with him here because the current Chelsea squad is certainly not mature enough, but when he says mature enough to not compete in three days, what happens when we qualify for European competition?
Will things become worse for us? This is a serious issue now because we are not able to defend our lead in the games, and that too against an average side that is fighting relegation this season.
Since our team will be exhausted from playing twice a week, perhaps they are not ready for European competition. We must focus on developing this side first since we are simply too incapable of being able to defend. A defender must first execute solid defence. Be assertive and enjoy defending. It seems that when it comes to hiring, we are paying too much attention to ball-playing CBs and overlooking the most crucial factor.
It appears that Pochettino has been having trouble setting up an intimidating defensive shape wherever he has been. His work grew more difficult at Chelsea when he saw youthful and inexperienced defenders.
