Mauricio Pochettino seems to be preparing himself for next season after his recent comments illustrate that the Argentine will continue at the club for another campaign. Pochettino was appointed Chelsea manager this season, and under him, the club has endured a patchy run.
Chelsea are currently ninth in the table out of the Carabao Cup and FA Cup, and now their only hope to secure a European spot for next season is to finish sixth in the table, which is achievable.
The Blues are just three points behind sixth place. Newcastle United, if they go on to win the remainder of the matches, can still end the season on a high note. This season additionally laid out the players’ performances and the areas in which the Argentine needs to bolster the team even more.
Pochettino’s recent comments underline his optimism that the board and fans will back him for another season despite his 1-0 defeat to Manchester City in the FA Cup semi-final. Speaking to the media during the press conference, (h/t Football. London) he said:
“We need to be ambitious and think about how we can be better next season. We need to finish well and strong this season.”
We will need to make squad adjustments if the Blues board chooses to extend the Argentine manager’s contract for one additional season. We have done rather well this campaign, and even if we won’t have any trophies, it will still be a fantastic term if we can place in the top six.
If we want to challenge for the title under Pochettino’s direction next season, we need a defender, another defensive midfielder, and a reliable striker. This season, he hardly had a fully fit squad, but he still managed to produce a fair amount of results with an inexperienced side, and he has done an excellent job with what little he had.
Pochettino should have his say in the summer transfer window and recruit players who he feels will be able to settle into his system and add much quality to the team.
