Mauricio Pochettino believes Chelsea competed well against Manchester City

Mauricio Pochettino emphasized in a post-match press conference that his team would be better prepared for such matchups if they faced teams like Manchester City more frequently. Manchester City secured a narrow 1-0 victory over Chelsea in the FA Cup semi-final to advance to the final.

A decisive 84th-minute goal from Bernardo Silva sealed the victory for Pep Guardiola’s side. Despite the defeat, Pochettino’s team can take some comfort in their performance, as they were the superior side throughout the match and created numerous scoring opportunities. However, luck was not on their side.

Nicolas Jackson squandered three excellent chances, while Ben Chilwell hesitated to play a pass to Raheem Sterling, who found himself one-on-one with the goalkeeper. Additionally, Chelsea’s early appeal for a penalty was dismissed by the referee after a Cole Palmer free-kick struck Jack Grealish’s hand.

Despite falling short, Pochettino was happy with his side’s efforts in the game, and speaking to Sky Sports, he said:

‘’I think the most important thing is how we played here, you know. Today we competed well, and I’m not going to say maybe we were a better side, but football is difficult to measure, and I think we can take positive things from the game because a group of players needs this moment and games, and we have to look forward to finishing the season and evaluating things after that.’’

Pochettino emphasized the excitement surrounding the team’s performance this season and highlighted the tangible results they’ve achieved. However, he acknowledged the team’s ongoing development, noting that it will require time to reach its full potential and become a more cohesive unit. The unpredictability associated with a developing team was also acknowledged.

Furthermore, the Blues boss stressed the importance of engaging in more competitive matches like the recent one, as they provide valuable learning experiences. Despite the inherent unpredictability, he expressed confidence in the team’s ability to compete for and win trophies.

Trips to Wembley have not sat well with is in recent years. The three losses to Liverpool, the defeat to Leicester City in the FA Cup final and now the setback against Man City. Hopefully, a shift in fortunes at the home of football is around the corner.
