A View From The Bridge

“Accept the team in a different way”- Mauricio Pochettino asks fans not to compare his team with Chelsea’s past title-winning teams

Mauricio Pochettino asks fans to stop comparing the old Chelsea side to his current team

Mauricio Pochettino is urging fans to embrace the current Chelsea team and refrain from comparing them to past iterations, especially following their recent 1-0 defeat to Manchester City in the FA Cup semi-final. Despite the club’s rich history of success under various managers, Pochettino emphasizes the need for supporters to focus on the present squad rather than dwelling on past achievements.

Throughout its history, Chelsea has seen managerial changes based on results, with success in trophies being the primary objective. The club has undergone different policies and approaches under various administrations, often leading to managerial turnover if results did not meet expectations.

The overarching goal for Chelsea has always been trophy success, with the club willing to make significant changes, including managerial dismissals or alterations to the team’s structure, to achieve this aim. However, with the arrival of Todd Boehly as the new owner, there may be shifts in the club’s approach and organizational structure. As Chelsea adapts to new leadership, Pochettino encourages fans to support the team as they navigate this transition period.

Everything has been different, which hasn’t made fans happy, who have demanded the sacking of Pochettino this season. The Argentine has insisted that fans need to stop living in the past and live in reality. Speaking to the media after the game, (h/t Football.London) he said:

”But I feel happy with the way we are evolving. Of course, I feel disappointed because we need to split two things: we think only about the history of Chelsea, and the team does not match the history of the club. We need to accept the team in a different way, not compare it with Chelsea’s history. The evolution is good in all circumstances. We need to be ambitious and think about how we can be better next season. We need to finish well and strong this season.”

Pochettino’s statements underscore the reality that sustained dominance in football is not guaranteed for any team. Clubs often undergo periods of transition and rebuilding, sometimes needing to rebuild from the ground up. Pochettino points to Manchester United as a prime example of this phenomenon.

Mauricio Pochettino is yet to win silverware with an English side.

During Sir Alex Ferguson’s tenure, Manchester United were a dominant force in European football, with winning the Premier League considered routine. However, following Ferguson’s departure, the club faced challenges and underwent significant transformations.

The transition period for Manchester United serves as a reminder that even the most successful clubs must adapt to changing circumstances and navigate periods of uncertainty. Pochettino’s remarks highlight the cyclical nature of football and the need for clubs to embrace change as they strive for success.

United’s struggles since Ferguson’s departure illustrate that sustained success is not guaranteed in football. It serves as a reminder that every club goes through periods of transition and change. This is the current situation at Chelsea, where the board recognizes the potential of a youthful and talented team. They are committed to developing this team into a dominant force in the coming years.
