Manchester United fans chanted ‘City Reject’ at Chelsea star Cole Palmer in 4-3 loss at Stamford Bridge
Call him a ‘City Reject’ and call him all sorts of names. It will surely not hurt Chelsea star Cole Jermaine Palmer as his hat-trick against his boyhood club saw Mauricio Pochettino’s side beat Erik ten Hag’s Manchester United 4-3 at Stamford Bridge in what was a thriller of a game.
Conor Gallagher’s early opener followed by Palmer’s spot-kick saw the Blues amass quite an early two-goal lead. However, merely 15 minutes after Chelsea’ second goal, Alejandro Garnacho ate into our lead. United, quickly scored another via Bruno Fernandes ensuring that both teams head into the tunnel level.
Garnacho scored his second goal of the night around the 70th minute, leaving Chelsea with a lot of work to do in not so much time. However, blatant stupidity from Diogo Dalot in the box saw him bring down Noni Madueke, handing Poch’s side a penalty with not a lot of added time left. Palmer made no mistake and it was level before United knew.
Cold Palmer!
However, the defining moment of the game came when the Blues utilised a late late corner-kick very efficiently. Enzo Fernandez, on set piece duty, passed it to Palmer standing at the edge of the box. The former Manchester City man then took a decent shot at the far post, which deflected off Scott McTominay’s thigh towards the near post, leaving the keeper nowhere near the scene. What a win that was. One thing Man United fans would regret apart from the loss, is their chant towards a man who eventually stole three points off them. Here is what they were chanting via BBC:
“City Reject!”
Too bad for Manchester United, that same City reject has more trophies in the last two seasons than your entire club since 2017. Despite labelling Palmer as a ‘reject’ from their rivals, his impact on the game and his contributions to Chelsea’s success spoke volumes. As the final whistle blew, the 21-year-old winger had silenced his critics AND HOW.
Amidst the euphoria of Chelsea’s triumph, the chants of ‘City Reject’ from the United faithful sounded only like background noise. Palmer’s heroics on the pitch overshadowed the brutal jeers, as he proved his worth with a match-winning performance.
