A View From The Bridge

Ian Maatsen sends message to Chelsea after UCL heroics as permanent Borussia Dortmund transfer looms

Ian Maatsen feels things should have worked out for him at Chelsea

The loan of Ian Maatsen at Borussia Dortmund seems to be proving fruitful for both the player and the club. Despite struggling for minutes at Chelsea, he has found his stride at Dortmund and has made significant contributions, including scoring a crucial goal in their Champions League quarter-final victory over Atletico Madrid.

Loaning out young players can often provide them with valuable playing time and experience, allowing them to develop their skills in competitive environments. Maatsen’s success at Dortmund highlights the benefits of such loan arrangements for both the player and the parent club.

The 22-year-old made only one Premier League start, and sending him on loan was the only decision where he could find regular game time. And his loan move to Dortmund has seemingly paid off after his goal against Atletico Madrid in a 4-2 win helped the German club secure a Champions League semi-final spot.

Following the game, Maatsen shared his thoughts on his move to Dortmund from Chelsea and said via Evening Standard:

“It was a surprise. I always had the belief that I should play for Chelsea, but unfortunately, for some reasons, it didn’t work out.

Maatsen’s loan spell at Dortmund has been a positive experience for him, allowing him to showcase his abilities and contribute to the team’s success. While he may have faced challenges at Chelsea, his performance at Dortmund suggests that he has the talent and determination to succeed at the highest level.

Maatsen scored for Borussia Dortmund to help them secure a semi-final spot in the Champions League.

It’s important to recognize that football is a complex and dynamic sport, and players’ career paths can be influenced by a variety of factors, including playing time, coaching decisions, and personal preferences. While the 22-year-old’s situation may not have worked out as expected at Chelsea, his success at Dortmund demonstrates that he has the ability to thrive elsewhere.

Ultimately, whether or not Pochettino made the “wrong” decision depends on various factors and perspectives. It’s essential to avoid making blanket judgments and instead consider the nuances of each player’s situation and career trajectory.

Maatsen’s playing style and strengths may not have aligned perfectly with the tactical approach and needs of Pochettino’s Chelsea team. In football, the suitability of a player for a particular team often depends on how well they fit into the coach’s tactical system and the specific requirements of their position.

Ultimately, football teams aim to create a balanced squad that complements each other’s strengths and covers for weaknesses across all areas of the pitch. While Maatsen may have found success at Dortmund, it’s possible that his playing style simply didn’t align with the specific requirements of Pochettino’s Chelsea team.
