According to Betfred (h/t Mirror), Glen Johnson has suggested Chelsea bring Raphael Varane Manchester United in the upcoming summer transfer window to potentially address defensive concerns for the Blues. Varane is a highly experienced center-back with a proven track record of success at the highest level, having won numerous trophies with Real Madrid and the French national team.
Given Chelsea’s ambitions and the need to strengthen their squad, especially in defense, Varane could be a valuable addition. His leadership qualities, defensive prowess, and ability to play out from the back would complement Chelsea’s style of play under Mauricio Pochettino.
However, securing Varane’s signature won’t be easy, as there could be competition from other clubs interested in signing him. Additionally, Varane’s contract situation at Manchester United and his potential availability as a free agent in the summer could attract considerable interest from various clubs across Europe.
Despite Varane’s current injury, there are rumors that he may return to his old Madrid residence in the summer. Johnson does, however, see a chance for Chelsea, given their ongoing defensive woes. The reports state that Johnson stated:
“Good players like that don’t come around often and they certainly come around less often on a free transfer. I know he’s not the Varane he was three or four years ago but he’s still a bloody good player.”
“Yes, he’s had his injury problems but that’s what outweighs the transfer fee if you’re buying him on a free and he’s only playing 40% of the games, then that’s still a good deal to do.”
“If you have got a chance with Varane on a free transfer and he’s only going to play 50% of the games, I still think it’s a good deal.”
Despite only starting 16 league games this season because of several injuries, Johnson thinks Varane’s depth of knowledge is still priceless. The United player has undoubtedly had a difficult season, but he has good reasons.
The race for a Europa League spot in the Premier League is indeed heating up, with Chelsea, Manchester United, and Newcastle United all vying for a place in the competition. Chelsea’s recent victory against Everton has boosted their hopes of qualifying, but they still face stiff competition from both United and Newcastle.
If Chelsea can win their remaining game and match Newcastle’s points tally, they will move ahead of Manchester United on goal differential. However, this scenario is contingent on various factors, including results from other matches involving the three teams.
Pochettino’s acknowledgment of the need for experienced players to bolster Chelsea’s squad reflects an understanding of the challenges they’ve faced, particularly in crucial moments of matches. The late equalizers against Burnley and Sheffield United have undoubtedly hindered Chelsea’s quest for European qualification.
To address these issues, Pochettino may prioritize recruiting players with proven experience and leadership qualities during the upcoming transfer window. These additions could provide stability and composure in crucial moments, helping Chelsea secure vital points in the closing stages of matches.
