A View From The Bridge

‘Fantastic’ Chelsea superstar joins long injury list, will undergo surgery and will miss rest of the season

The ‘fantastic’ Chelsea superstar, Enzo Fernandez, joins the long injury list and will undergo surgery, missing out on all remaining games this season

According to the reports, Chelsea star Enzo Fernandez has finally made up his mind to undergo groin surgery. This will lead to Enzo missing out on the remaining games of the season.

The Argentine midfielder plans to get surgery as soon as possible to remove the agony he has been experiencing. The midfielder substituted during Chelsea’s win over Everton earlier this month but has since started in both their FA Cup defeat to Manchester City and a 5-0 loss to Arsenal.

According to the Argentine media site Ole (h/t Football London), he played those games despite having an inguinal hernia. Finally, the Chelsea star has made a decision to end his pain once and for all by undergoing surgery.

The process

Fernandez has opted to get surgery to attempt to recuperate in time to compete in the Copa America this summer. The event will take place in the United States, beginning on June 20 and concluding on July 14.

It is reported that the decision was taken after the Blues were eliminated from the FA Cup. According to reports, discussions took place between the club’s medical staff and Argentina’s national team medics.

Reports add that the recovery process will take around three weeks before he intensifies his preparations for Copa America. Argentina will rely heavily on Fernandez and want him to be fully healthy.

The unavailability of Enzo would surely affect Chelsea in their future games. Enzo has made a decent name for himself since the transfer, with Chelsea legends like Frank Lampard praising him. The former Chelsea midfielder believes Enzo is “a fantastic talent” and “the future of Chelsea.”

This is it for Enzo as for this season

Pochettino has been missing numerous key players this season and is lacking in midfield options, with Lesley Ugochukwu and Roméo Lavia sidelined for an extended period of time. With Fernandez’s departure, Chelsea will be left with only Conor Gallagher and Moises Caicedo as fit midfielders.

Fernandez has not been able to realize his potential since he was signed by Benfica for £107 million ($134 million) in January last year. The midfielder did concede that he does not feel “100 percent”, which might be one of the reasons for his poor performance.

More Chelsea news

Mauricio Pochettino‘s side is still in contention for a European spot, although they are six points behind Manchester United following their derby defeat to Arsenal. To keep their European dreams alive, the Blues must string together a flawless run of results in their next six matches, beginning with a tough trip to Aston Villa on Saturday evening.
