“They really had conversations”- Fabrizio Romano confirms Liverpool rejected Chelsea approach for star forward last year

Fabrizio Romano reveals Chelsea wanted to sign Darwin Nunez last summer

Chelsea’s struggle with clinical finishing in front of the net was a glaring issue last season, with the club enduring a goal drought that rivaled even top strikers like Erling Haaland. In a bid to address this shortfall, the Blues sought out a reliable striker, ultimately securing Nicolas Jackson from Villarreal.

Jackson’s arrival raised eyebrows among fans, given his relatively low profile in European football. While the striker has notched ten Premier League goals since joining Chelsea, his inconsistent finishing has at times left supporters underwhelmed.

Recent reports suggest that Chelsea had their sights set on Liverpool striker Darwin Nunez last summer, but their pursuit was stymied by Jurgen Klopp’s reluctance to part with the former Benfica star. Fabrizio Romano shed light on this development, revealing Chelsea’s interest in Nunez during a conversation with GiveMeSport.

‘’What I wanted to tell you guys is to remind you and let you enter into the details of the story that Chelsea, at the end of the last summer transfer window, in the final weeks when they were looking for a striker, really tried to bring in Darwin Nunez.

‘’What I heard is that Jurgen Klopp said no to that move and really wanted to keep a crucial player for the present and future of Liverpool, but Chelsea were super keen on Darwin Nunez.

Nunez is far from clinical but he is a formidable striker who is a handful to handle. Given how poor Jackson has been, we can’t argue that landing Nuinez could have been an improvement.

Chelsea inquired about Darwin Nunez last season but Jurgen Klopp wanted to keep the striker.

It’s understandable that Chelsea fans might have concerns about Darwin Nunez’s potential arrival, especially considering the struggles of Nicolas Jackson to consistently find the net. Adding another striker with a similar track record could indeed have compounded the team’s scoring woes.

Given Nunez’s perceived shortcomings in front of goal and the risk of replicating Jackson’s underwhelming performances, it’s clear that Chelsea will need to take a different approach in their recruitment process for the upcoming season. Finding a striker who not only possesses a killer instinct but also complements the team’s playing style and has a commanding presence in the box will be crucial for the Blues moving forward.

Bringing in a more clinical striker like Ivan Toney could indeed be a promising solution for Chelsea’s scoring woes. Toney’s proven track record in the Premier League and wealth of experience could provide the team with the attacking prowess they need. Additionally, his presence would offer healthy competition for Nicolas Jackson, fostering his development and pushing him to elevate his game on the pitch.

Toney’s arrival could inject a new level of potency into Chelsea’s forward line and help bolster their quest for success in the upcoming season. Nunez might have more potential but Toney is a more consistent performer.
