Chelsea eye Athletic Bilbao goalkeeper Unai Simon this summer
Chelsea are once again poised to seek a new goalkeeper, despite acquiring Roberto Sanchez from Brighton & Hove Albion and Dorde Petrovic from Major League Soccer last summer. However, it appears that the club remains unconvinced by the qualities of both goalkeepers and is eager for a fresh addition next season. A new name has emerged as a target for the Blues: Athletic Bilbao goalkeeper Unai Simon.
According to 90min via Fichajes, Chelsea view the Spanish goalkeeper as an ideal shot-stopper who could serve as a key addition to bolster their goalkeeping ranks and strengthen the team overall. The Blues have struggled defensively this season, conceding the most goals in the league and currently sitting in ninth place.
The team has also shown signs of vulnerability in defense, and Chelsea’s current goalkeepers have failed to make a strong impression. It seems that the club is eager to bolster the goalkeeping position with additional talent.
Unai Simon has been in outstanding form for Bilbao and played a pivotal role in their recent Copa del Rey triumph. His performance in the penalty shootout against Mallorca, where Bilbao emerged victorious with a 4-2 scoreline, showcased his composure and shot-stopping abilities.
Roberto Sanchez has struggled to establish himself as a reliable goalkeeper this season, with occasional mistakes raising doubts about his suitability for the club’s long-term plans. Meanwhile, Dorde Petrovic is still adapting to the demands of the Premier League, although his reaction times have been criticized for being too slow on occasion.
For us, Simon would be a fantastic addition and a significant enhancement to our squad. He possesses all the qualities required to be one of the best goalkeepers in the world and is also the preferred choice for the national team.
