Former Chelsea legend Eddie Newton has warned the club to avoid overelying on Cole Palmer, as it could prove toxic for them and the manager. Chelsea signed Palmer from Manchester City on the deadline day of last summer, and since his transfer, the forward has gone on to become the most influential player on the pitch.
At just 21, the youngster is already competing with Erling Haaland for the Premier League Golden Boot after recording 20 league goals already. Palmer is a tremendous asset to the team, and at times, the group mustn’t rely on the England international and collectively help the team win.
Furthermore, putting too much faith in a rookie player could backfire because other players must give their best throughout games rather than leaning solely on Palmer. Although it makes sense that he creates something out of nothing, everyone ought to take part in this sport as it is a team effort.
And Newton is concerned that the club is slowly depending on Palmer to do everything. Speaking to TalkSport, the former Chelsea legend shared his concern and said:
“For me, they’re relying too heavily on Cole Palmer. The reliance on that young man is too much at the present moment in time. It just seems like the goals; he’s the one that stimulates the goals.’’
Newton’s words put into question whether other Chelsea players are depending too much on Palmer to do something on the pitch when others lose hope. He has been the only player who has been scoring goals consistently, and behind him is Nicolas Jackson, who has 10 Premier League goals, there is a vast difference between both players’s tallys this season.
Our players give their all during a game, and the player who makes the biggest impact is the one who gets noticed. Palmer has always been a key member of our team, so it’s acceptable if he keeps making a statement as long as it doesn’t negatively impact us or show how much we rely on him.
