Chelsea have condemned racial abuse towards their striker, Nicolas Jackson, in their 1-0 defeat to Manchester City in the FA Cup semi-final. The former Villarreal striker had plenty of chances to help his side reach the final, but his poor finishing touch meant the Blues failed to score a goal.
Jackson played a solid game, but the outcome would have been different if he had seized those opportunities. He had three excellent chances to reverse the situation, but his poor finishing touch cost Blues the game.
The forward was subjected to racist taunts on social media after the game, and he looked dejected and regretful about his wasted opportunities. It’s normal to be disappointed when your players don’t perform, therefore criticising them is acceptable. However, it’s completely foolish and not the critique you think it is when you react racist towards their skin tone.
The Blues targeted those people who racially abused Jackson on his Instagram post and released a statement, saying via BBC:
“There is no place in society for any form of discrimination, and we operate a zero-tolerance approach to any incident of this nature. The club will support any criminal prosecutions and take the strongest possible action, including bans, against any individual who is found to be a season ticket holder or member.”
Abusing someone for having a different skin colour will never be the sort of criticism you think it is. There are plenty of ways to criticise someone, and when people choose to be racist, it says a lot about their growing up. Real fans will never racially abuse their players for not having a good game.
In his debut season, Jackson has demonstrated nearly every quality that he possesses, enabling him to establish himself as a premier striker for us. In just his first season as a Chelsea player, he has already scored ten goals in the league, which highlights how quickly he is developing as a striker.
Even though Jackson may not have had the best game against City, he has all the makings of a top-class striker. We must be patient, invest in him and support him as much as we can.
