A View From The Bridge

Mauricio Pochettino names underused star as one of Chelsea leaders who is doing a ‘fantastic job’ helping young talent

Chelsea boss Mauricio Pochettino says Marcus Bettinelli does a ‘fantastic job’ helping young talent

Mauricio Pochettino’s recent comments suggest a potential shift in Chelsea’s transfer strategy this summer. The Argentine manager, who has previously been vocal about the need for maturity and experience in the squad, appears to be more open to the idea of bringing in seasoned players to complement the youthful talent already at Stamford Bridge.

After Chelsea’s disappointing 2-2 draw against Sheffield United, where they twice surrendered leads, Pochettino criticized his players for lacking maturity.

Pochettino highlighted the contributions of senior players like Thiago Silva, Raheem Sterling, and Marcus Bettinelli, emphasising the importance of their presence in guiding and mentoring the younger members of the squad. Despite Bettinelli’s limited playing time, Pochettino praised his role in helping the development of Chelsea’s emerging talents. Here is what he had to say via Express:

“We can keep going in the same way with the policy [to sign young players],”

“But in the squad, we have Thiago Silva, Raheem Sterling and Marcus Bettinelli. Maybe Marcus isn’t playing but he does a fantastic job helping the young guys.”

“We have experienced players in the squad. It is not going against the project to have some players who are helping the young guys to perform, to be professional, and to understand what it means to be in the Premier League and to be at Chelsea.”

“We need to talk and decide the strategy for next season.”

Leadership is key!

Bettinelli, since joining the club back in 2021, has only managed to play one game for the Blues across all competitions; in the FA Cup. The role of a third-choice goalkeeper is more often than not, an extremely sporadic one, and having an “old-head” like him around the youngsters will surely help them keep their feet grounded and think of the best possible football they can play.

This endorsement of Bettinelli and his off-field contributions speaks volumes about the player’s character and leadership within the squad. While Bettinelli’s on-field opportunities have been limited, his influence behind the scenes appears to be highly valued by the coaching staff.

His experience and knowledge of the English game can provide invaluable support to Chelsea’s emerging talents, helping them navigate the challenges of top-flight football and understand the demands of representing a club of Chelsea’s stature. Bettinelli has over 120 appearances for our local rivals, Fulham and that surely cannot be taken for granted.

A leader within the squad.

Pochettino’s remarks indicate a potential shift towards a more balanced squad composition, combining the youthful energy and potential with the wisdom and leadership of seasoned professionals. As Chelsea look to shape their squad for the upcoming season, the importance of striking this balance between youth and experience is surely becoming increasingly evident.
