Alan Smith praises Ben Chilwell for his role in Alfie Gilchrist goal against Everton

Chelsea vice-captain Ben Chilwell did extremely well to find space on the left side and beat his man to deliver a cross into the box in the buildup to the Blues’ sixth goal in their 6-0 win over Everton. The cross, initially parried away by Jordan Pickford, went straight to Alfie Gilchrist, who took his shot the first time and scored his first senior Chelsea goal.

The centre-back and occasional right-back has 14 first-team appearances to his name and has been mighty impressive so far. Speaking of his goal and how well Chilwell did to get the cross in, here is what Alan Smith had to say via the BBC:

“What a celebration that was!”

“Sheer joy, Alfie Gilchrist looks like a popular boy judging by his team-mates reaction.”

“Ben Chilwell does well and then Gilchrist keeps it down with a bit of power – lovely moment.”

Due to the absence of Malo Gusto and regular captain Reece James, Gilchrist has seen himself thrust into the first-team setup and there’s absolutely no doubt that he has been better than decent in his sporadic appearances so far.

Let’s go, Alfie!

His goal against Everton served as a shining example of Gilchrist’s potential and provided a glimpse into the promising future that lies ahead for the young defender. The movement, the composed finish and the way he presented himself otherwise as well has painted a good image for Gilchrist and his future.

Looking ahead, both Chilwell and Gilchrist are poised to play pivotal roles for Chelsea as they continue to challenge on multiple fronts. Chilwell, with his wealth of experience and attacking flair, provides a valuable dimension to the Blues’ play, contributing both defensively and offensively. His ability to overlap, deliver dangerous crosses, and link up with the attackers adds a potent threat down the left flank, making him an invaluable asset for the Blues.

With his maiden senior goal now under his belt, Gilchrist will be eager to build on this momentum and establish himself as a regular fixture in Mauricio Pochettino’s starting lineup.
