Todd Boehly to be removed as Chelsea chairman; the club ‘moves to a new direction’

Todd Boehly to vacate his role as Chelsea chairman at the end of the 2026–27 season as the club ‘aims for a new direction’

Todd Boehly has emerged as a prominent figure within the Chelsea ownership group since assuming control of the club from Roman Abramovich in May 2022. The 50-year-old has been a frequent presence at Stamford Bridge, adopting a more hands-on approach compared to some of his fellow investors.

Although Boehly holds a minority stake in the Blues, with private equity firm Clearlake Capital owning 61.5 per cent, he, along with Hansjorg Wyss and Mark Walter, collectively own an equal share of the remaining 38.5 per cent.

Despite his position, the American billionaire has faced significant backlash from Chelsea supporters since BlueCo’s takeover. This discontent manifested recently in a campaign against the owners, featuring Boehly depicted as a clown on widely distributed stickers bearing the slogan ‘Get them out.’

Todd Boehly has become a lightning rod for criticism at Chelsea

Chelsea have a written agreement that they can change chairman every five yearsThe Daily Mail now reports that the Blues will make use of the clause to remove Boehly from his position at the end of the 2026–27 season.

The Chelsea Supporters’ Trust released a letter that took aim at Boehly and warned about the threat of “irreversible toxicity” if things do not change at Stamford Bridge. The CST said:

“The club is at it’s lowest since the early 1980s and they have become a laughing stock.”

Boehly has acknowledged making “mistakes” during his tenure, a sentiment echoed by his involvement in various controversies, including purportedly advocating for an impractical formation for the team. Mauricio Pochettino’s squad currently sits in 11th place in the Premier League standings, having suffered defeat to an injury-ridden Liverpool side in the Carabao Cup final last month.

The news of Boehly stepping down from the chairmanship in three years brings a mix of emotions for Chelsea fans. While it offers hope for change, there’s concern that another figure from the unpopular BlueCo consortium will assume the role, per the agreement. Despite potential shifts in leadership, fundamental aspects of the club’s operations, like its commitment to signing young talent from across Europe, are expected to endure.

Nevertheless, many view Todd’s departure as a potential catalyst for improvement, given the club’s recent struggles under his leadership. Chelsea faces a pressing need to address issues like a lengthy injury list and upcoming crucial fixtures. Urgency is paramount as they seek to rectify their shortcomings and regain their competitive edge.
