A View From The Bridge

Pochettino answers if his ‘friend’ Jose Mourinho can do a better job than him at Chelsea

Mauricio Pochettino feels it would depend on current state of the team when asked if Jose Mourinho would have done better job at Chelsea

Mauricio Pochettino was probed by reporters ahead of the Chelsea game against Newcastle United, and one of them asked if Jose Mourinho would have done better with the current Chelsea squad than him. It certainly had not gone down well but he had to give a diplomat answer.

The Argentine manager felt it would have been based on the situation because what Pochettino has inherited is full of young players while Mourinho took charge of a squad mix of experienced and youngsters. With the current Chelsea squad, Mourinho would have laboured to get the results.

It’s a true reality because this squad isn’t mature enough to deliver consistent performance and positive results week in and week out. A manager would need his own set of players who he feels will quicken the process and also aid in the development of the club with other players.

There are a few flaws in the current Chelsea board and our recruitment process, which has only emphasised signing young players. Pochettino feels it’s not an easy job for any manager to turn them into a winning team overnight, and When asked if Mourinho would do a better job, he further commented via Evening Standard:

“I respect Jose. He’s my friend, and he was amazing for this club. Circumstances are circumstances. We need to keep pushing, believing in us, and accepting all the things that came from the fans. Of course, I respect the fans.’’

To some extent, Pochettino’s remarks are valid because the current state of the team will make it exhausting for any manager to turn the team into an instant success. Julian Nagelsmann was one of the managers the Blues interviewed before hiring Pochettino. He believed his management style wouldn’t mesh with the club’s basic structure, hiring, and process decisions.

Pochettino believes that everything is contingent upon the situation. Potter stated, “We believe he is the issue, but he isn’t.” Even Lampard, who got us into the Champions League, couldn’t win when he came back, so one thing is for sure: these managers aren’t inexperienced.

We have assembled a team that is obviously lacking in fundamentals. No character, no experience, and lower quality. To improve it, we must put in effort. Whether we want to play Pochettino’s style of football or something different is the question we need to address. We must support the person we select and give them enough time to build a team and a new culture.
