Paul Robinson applauds Chelsea target Ivan Toney’s calm penalty in England’s 2-2 draw with Belgium
Chelsea target Ivan Toney was on the scoresheet in England’s 2-2 draw with Belgium in international friendlies. The injury to Harry Kane provided the Brentford striker with a chance to further boost his stocks, and the striker didn’t disappoint with a composed penalty.
With Belgium already leading, Toney’s approach on the penalty seemed like ice coursing through his veins. The forward took only a few steps to bury the ball on the left side, sending the custodian the wrong way.
After the game, the striker was praised by Paul Robinson for putting his side on par with Belgium. Speaking to the BBC, Robinson said:
‘’The whole midfield has stepped up, and Ivan Toney has been brilliant so far.’’
Scoring penalties is always tough.
When your side is already behind, penalties are never easy to score, but Toney’s manner of play made it appear quite simple. When we analyse penalties, we revisit the moment in the FIFA World Cup semifinals against France when Harry Kane missed one of the most momentous penalties of his career, which saw the Three Lions bow out of the tournament losing 2-1.
The amount of pressure you are under when you are taking a spot kick is immense. The Bayern Munich striker scored the first spot kick but missed the second, costing the Three Lions a spot in the semi-final.
Toney’s calmness and composure when taking penalties certainly make him one of the best spot-kick takers. His spot-kick record is also sensational; the former Newcastle United has never missed a penalty since he became the first-choice penalty taker for his side.

Meanwhile, Chelsea have their own first-choice spot-kick taker in Cole Palmer, who hasn’t missed a single penalty since taking on the responsibility of spot kicks. The former Manchester City player is always sure and calm when taking the spot kicks, which has seen him reach a tally of 14 goals across all competitions.
