Paul Merson has expressed his unhappiness with Chelsea’s transfer business under Todd Boehly and has advised the club to avoid selling Conor Gallagher next summer. The Blues are set to embark on another squad overhaul and have put many academy players in the shop window as they seek to earn profit in order to comply with their Financial Fair Play woes.
It has become a habit to spend a hefty amount of money under Todd Boehly, and their spending in the last three windows, which has reached £1 billion is another prime example of why they should be wise with their investment in players.
However, despite their exorbitant spending, the results on the pitch have remained poor, as they sit 11th in the Premier League table. But the Blues will continue their heavy spending, and this time they will be keen to stay within the FFP limit, which means many players could be shown the exit gate next summer.
But Merson hasn’t been happy with the way the Blues have treated Gallagher and told them to change their transfer rules. (h/t Express) He further told Sky Sports:
“The rules need to change, and they need to change very quickly because someone like Chelsea probably has to sell Conor Gallagher, who is one of their own.’ And they will sell him for £50m or £60m, and then they will be allowed to buy a £100m player from abroad.”
Merson’s remarks are a perfect illustration of why Chelsea have to alter their transfer strategy and refrain from overpaying for any one player. The former player for Arsenal made the right decision because we often overspend on players rather than engaging in negotiations under new owners.
Gallagher’s performance has laid out why he should stay at Chelsea, and even if we sell him, we will once again make significant transfers, which is something we should try to avoid. We need to change that because if we continue to do so, sooner or later we could breach the FFP rule.
Ideally, the most recent transfer windows have provided valuable insight into why we should exercise caution when spending and refrain from only signing young players for large sums of money, as we have witnessed with Moises Caicedo, who has frequently been singled out for his performance because of his big price tag.
