Mauricio Pochettino says he didn’t celebrate his birthday this time following a 2-2 draw, as he cancelled his dinner with his wife and instead watched the Asian Champions League with his coaching staff.
The 52-year-old didn’t feel like celebrating his birthday and was discontent with Chelsea’s draw with Brentford at the Gtech Community Stadium. He informed his wife that he wasn’t in the mood to go to dinner.
The former Tottenham Hotspur head coach’s time at Chelsea has been on thin ice after a mixed start to the season. The performance of the club hasn’t been stable, as Chelsea have remained inconsistent in eking out positive results.
In his recent meeting with the press, the Argentine manager revealed what he did with his wife on his birthday, and said via Evening Standard:
“Saturday, after the Brentford game, the draw was like a loss. It killed my wife because I cancelled our dinner. I said I didn’t want to go for dinner; I wanted to stay at home.’’
It was his personal choice, which we must respect because it’s evident that you won’t feel like going anywhere when your team doesn’t play well and end up losing a game and having to deal with jeers from the crowd as the final whistle sounds.
Birthdays are only celebrated once a year, so if Chelsea had won, he might have enjoyed with the squad and then his spouse. If he stays at the club, perhaps he will have another opportunity to do it next year.
He has so far done an admirable job in this role, and many seeing him concur that it is challenging to take over a team with so many inadequacies given how long it takes to address them. There will undoubtedly be a long road ahead, but in the end, the result will be sweeter.
