Mason Mount concluded a £60 million ($76m) move to Manchester United last summer which marked an end to a transfer saga that became tedious following widespread rumours. The deal to Old Trafford saw the England international bid adieu to his boyhood club, a place that he called home since the age of six, and walls that saw him develop from a sweet kid to a teenager, and turn into a household name.
While he moved to Manchester Reds, Mount was subject to interest from Arsenal and Liverpool, with both the clubs being ‘in contact’ before his move away from Chelsea concluded.
Reports were linking the 25-year-old with a move to Arsenal with the Gunners reportedly wanting to secure his services before they moved on to Kai Havertz as Mount preferred an Old Trafford transfer. Kai Havertz moved to North London for £60million with a further £5m in add-ons last summer while Mount moved to United for a similar fee.
Mount’s contract at the Bridge was arriving at its conclusion this summer and if the Blues didn’t sell him last summer, they’d risk losing him on a free transfer this year.
Transfer guru Fabrizio Romano recently spoke about how Liverpool and Arsenal contacted chiefs at Chelsea over a possible move for Mount, although the Italian reiterated how Manchester was always his most likely destination.
“There was also an interesting United story involving Mason Mount, with Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta alleged to have told confidants that the Gunners were very close to signing Mount from Chelsea,” Fabrizio Romano writing via CaughtOffside.
“My understanding is that there were contacts with both Arsenal and Liverpool while his situation remained uncertain at Chelsea, but this was not in the summer, it was around April when clubs started to ask about Mount deal conditions. That’s it, but Man United was always the priority for the player.”
Mason Mount has struggled to make his mark at Manchester United and he would be hoping to find his touch before the end of the ongoing campaign.
