Mario Melchiot says Chelsea fans should avoid booing Raheem Sterling as it emotionally affects them

Mario Melchiot has slammed Chelsea fans for booing Raheem Sterling in the 4-2 win against Leicester City last week. The England international missed a penalty and additionally squandered two big chances.

Sterling endured a poor evening and faced the wrath of Chelsea fans, who were disappointed in his 29-year-old performance and whistled at him when Mauricio Pochettino subbed him off.

Sterling was barely a threat in the attacking line despite providing an assist in the first half. The Foxes got into the match in second-half after Sterling was culpable because the game could have been dead in the first half if he had converted those opportunities and the penalty

However, former Chelsea player Melchiot wasn’t happy with the fans jeering the former Manchester City, and speaking to ESPN, he gave his verdict on fans booing Sterling:

“I am talking from experience; when you boo a player, I want people to understand that it goes really deep in us. The feeling of almost cutting us open. It really hurts us emotionally. You never forget when people do you wrong; that’s why I will support it and say, ‘No, I don’t like it’.”

Fans will somehow show their frustration!!

Melchiot makes a valid point when he says that being jeered by your own supporters destroys your self-esteem and is one of the worst feelings when you are already performing poorly on the pitch.

After all these years playing in the Premier League, supporters will ultimately become weary of Sterling’s performance. Cole Palmer ought to have received a penalty instead of him. In addition, he blew up two fantastic opportunities. Although Sterling’s performances have been inconsistent this season, he should be a mentor to young players and set an example for them.
