Chelsea shift focus from Ivan Toney, pursuing young talent in striker search

The upcoming summer transfer window comes as an opportunity for Chelsea to ameliorate the current gaps in the squad and the number nine position is one of the places that the Blues are looking to reinforce following their struggles in front of goal this season.

There were reports about Chelsea weighing up a potential transfer for Brentford striker Ivan Toney following the links with the English striker in the winter transfer window. The Bees’ Brobdingnagian asking price put off any potential deal in January with Todd Boehly & Co. expecting to sit down with Brentford in the summer window when the situation is different and more alternatives are available.

However, according to transfer guru Fabrizio Romano on Caught Offside, Chelsea may abandon their hunt for Toney when the summer finally comes around. The Italian insists that the age of Ivan Toney is keeping Chelsea from spending big bucks on his services owing to keeping consistent with the singing ‘young talent’ transfer policy that Chelsea has implemented since Todd Boehly took over the reins of the club.

Ivan Toney has also been subject to links with Arsenal in January and is linked with a move to North London in the summer as well. Romano calls Arsenal an option while he also terms Manchester United as a potential opportunity for the 27-year-old striker.

Speaking on today’s podcast, Romano delivered an update on Ivan Toney, saying: “I’m not sure Chelsea are that convinced on Ivan Toney anymore, I think they’ve started to look at different kinds of strikers in terms of age. Toney could be an option for Arsenal, but we’ll see.”

“Manchester United will also be in the market for a striker – they have to decide internally if they want an experienced striker, and if so Toney could be a fantastic opportunity.”

Chelsea have a different bracket of strikers that they are looking at going into the summer. Ivan Toney might not be the youngest striker going around but he comes with invaluable Premier League experience. Let’s wait and see how this pans out.
