Fabrizio Romano has shed some light on why Chelsea didn’t pursue Victor Osimhen in the January transfer window and reveals the club will look at different options in the summer window for their centre-forward.
The Blues’ goal-scoring shortcomings have made club concerns worse. Under Mauricio Pochettino, it has somewhat improved, but the issue persists, and the team is looking to add a productive striker.
There have been many names linked with the Chelsea move; a few of them have been Osimhen, Ivan Toney, and Viktor Gyokeres. However, so far, nothing is concrete, and the arrival of the summer window will be another important transfer where the club will have to find a striker who will make the difference.
Journalist Fabrizio Romano has provided some insight into Chelsea’s summer window transfer plan for a striker and also revealed why the club didn’t sign Osimhen. Speaking to Caught Offside, he said:
‘’The interest has always been there, and it was never a possibility to sign Victor Osimhen in January because Napoli didn’t want to sell him and he was with Nigeria for AFON, and it was never a concrete interest in the January transfer window. It’s always fair to share that Chelsea never had any heavy interest in signing a striker because, I believe, there will be different options in the summer, and for sure, Osimhen is one of them.‘’
It was the first time we had gone the entire January without spending a dime on signings under Boehly. Rather, we either loaned or sold the players. Osimhen’s release clause and our financial difficulties made his signing unattainable. The Blues have already begun to compile a list of strikers they would like to sign and hopefully, they don’t go for young, inexperienced centre-forward.
Our inability to score goals has been a major concern under every manager, and it has lingered since the departure of many prominent strikers, such as Fernando Torres, Diego Costa, and Didier Drogba. Since their exit, we haven’t been able to find a clinical striker, and it has continued to happen many times.
We have spent a significant amount of money on the signing of strikers but have flopped big time after enjoying a productive season. We need to find a striker who can be counted on for multiple seasons, therefore choosing the right person is important.
