Chelsea women’s megastar facing trial for alleged racially aggravated assault of an officer

Chelsea women’s star Sam Kerr is facing trial in the UK

Chelsea Women striker Sam Kerr is facing a trial in the UK following being accused of racially aggravated harassment of a police officer. The Matildas captain made an appearance in front of the court on Monday after being accused of causing distress to an officer after the 30-year-old used insulting, threatening or abusive words when the officer was responding to a complaint apropos of a taxi fare in Twickenham, south-west London, on 30 January 2023.

According to a report by Daily Mail, the Australian appeared in front of Kingston Crown Court via video link and confirmed her identity with her name as she spoke to enter a not-guilty plea to the pressed charge.

Metropolitan police in a statement said:

“Samantha Kerr, 30 (10.09.93) of Richmond was charged via postal charge requisition on 21 January with a racially aggravated offence under Section 4A Public Order Act 1986. The charge relates to an incident involving a police officer who was responding to a complaint involving a taxi fare on 30 January 2023 in Twickenham.”

Sam Kerr is expected to undergo a trial in February next year and the trial is expected to take up to 4 days as two police officers are scheduled to give evidence.

Football Australia also issued a statement saying they are “aware of the legal proceedings involving Sam Kerr in the United Kingdom. As this is an ongoing legal matter, we are unable to provide further comment at this time. Our focus remains on supporting all our players, both on and off the field. We will continue to monitor the situation and provide support as appropriate.”

Sam Kerr is one of the most recognizable female footballers in the world. The 30-year-old helped the Matildas reach the semi-finals in the Women’s World Cup last year and was the designated personnel representing Australia and carrying the Australian flag at the coronation of King Charles in Westminster Abbey.

She suffered an anterior cruciate ligament injury ending her season and Chelsea fans would be looking to have her back on the scoring boots soon. Kerr has a phenomenal goal-scoring record with 99 goals for Chelsea women in 128 games. As she goes through the trial, we hope the truth prevails.
