In his weekly column for CaughtOffside, Fabrizio Romano reiterated Chelsea and their striking priorities for the upcoming summer transfer window and explained the situation surrounding Viktor Gyokeres.
Consistently scoring goals has been a major issue at Stamford Bridge this season, leaving the West Londoners in the bottom half of the Premier League table, currently eleventh. Injury concerns, combined with unreliability in front of goal, have been a cause of concern for Mauricio Pochettino & Co. Christopher Nkunku has been sidelined for the majority of the season and his absence has been keenly felt, as Nikolas Jackson has failed to capitalize during his extended run up front.
This leaves Chelsea peeping in the market for a considerable centre-forward who can habitually have an impact in the scoring department.
While a few names have been associated with the Blues for a while now, Todd Boehly & Co. are also looking at other strikers who can make an instant impact.
According to a report by Mirror, Chelsea were conducting their due diligence alongside Premier League rivals Arsenal and Manchester United for Viktor Gyokeres. The trio of English clubs had their scouts in attendance on Thursday evening as Sporting CP beat Benfica 2-1 in the Taca da Liga semi-finals.
Viktor Gyokeres didn’t disappoint as he scored the 31st goal of his season in front of the scouts on Thursday evening.
Sporting Lisbon signed the 25-year-old from Coventry City last July, however, the Swede has a whopping release clause on his current contract with the club. The Swede striker is expected to cost a precious premium this summer with multiple big clubs chasing his signatures.
Viktor Gyokeres’ services are expensive, it is to be seen if the Londoners consider him worth the fee, especially with other alternatives available in the market.
