Plenty of questions were answered when Chelsea cruised past Aston Villa in the FA Cup fifth round after beating them 3-1. The win was a breath of fresh air following embarrassing defeats to Liverpool and Wolves.
The team recovered magnificently after an onslaught of criticism on the manager, Mauricio Pochettino’s team had a slip in form, but a victory over the Villains will be an injection of clean atmosphere.
It has grown difficult for other clubs to visit Villa Park because of the Lions’ great home record; yet, the Blues’ spectacular attacking performance made Villa appear like a midtable team.
The win certainly eased some pressure on the Argentine manager, but given the next matches they will face, the 51-year-old will be under stress to produce results. This match served as a great example that Pochettino should be given a chance, and the gaffer asked the fans to stop living in nostalgia as he told, (h/t Football.London) post-match media:
“We need to stop thinking we are Chelsea from the last 20 years because we are not any more this type of Chelsea that people believe. Now we need to move on, and all together, we need to create this project and provide the team, the youngest team in the Premier League, with the possibility to perform, to find the balance, to be consistent, and not only to play well today and tomorrow.
The Pochettino comment makes sense because nostalgia isn’t a sustainable way of living; it just makes us feel good for a short duration. Take Manchester United, for example. They have won numerous titles in the past, but they are currently having trouble and haven’t won the championship since 2013. This shows how far they have fallen, and their supporters are getting impatient since their team isn’t producing more titles.
You will eventually have to face the reality of the club as it is today and its future direction, so you cannot continue to live in the past. What’s done is done, and now it’s time to back Pochettino, who is struggling currently, but with time he will produce results.
