Mauricio Pochettino regarded Chelsea’s 3-1 win over Aston Villa as the best performance of the season, as the Blues secured their place in the FA Cup fifth round and will face Leeds United.
Conor Gallagher broke the deadlock in just 11 minutes of the play before Nicolas Jackson doubled the lead in the 21st minute; and after halftime, Enzo Fernandez’s stunning free-kick ensured Chelsea’s place in the next round of the FA Cup.
This was Unai Emery’s third loss at home in 24 games in almost a full year. It was always going to be a difficult first half, but this is the kind of tenacity that fans this season has been crying out for. Pochettino agreed with the Blues’ performance, labelled it as the best show of the campaign, and further told the media, as quoted by Fabrizio Romano:
“Tonight we were united. We fight for each other. We fight for our fans. We fight for the badge. We fight for the coaching staff. All together. This was maybe the best performance of the season for us.”.
It’s also terrific to see inspiring reactions. Malo Gusto and Moises Caicedo were excellent following a terrible week, and Conor Gallagher was great. Enzo Fernandez was defiant, ripping off his shirt. Moving forward, we needed to put up a strong performance against a formidable opponent. We hope that this kind of inspiration lasts throughout rather than simply being sporadic.
This game showed the willingness our young squad had to win the match, and it was really exciting to witness how they pressed and scored goals and had support for each other. This commitment to every single game and tactic becomes an expectation now.
We tactically outclassed a team that beat the likes of Arsenal, Manchester City and Tottenham Hotspur this season. And hopefully, the players will play with this much willingness, and we will have a season to remember under the Argentine manager.
