Pochettino says he is pleased with Chelsea’s star midfield duo: “They deserve to feel happy”

Mauricio Pochettino says he is pleased for Chelsea duo Enzo Fernandez and Conor Gallagher

Chelsea boss Mauricio Pochettino has revealed that he is pleased for midfield duo Enzo Fernandez and Conor Gallagher as they ‘deserve to be happy’, speaking in an interview as quoted by Italian journalist Fabrizio Romano on X (formerly known as Twitter).

Enzo and Gallagher were at their imperious best in the impressive 3-1 win over Aston Villa in the FA Cup clash midweek. The duo got their names on the scoresheet with the former scoring an imperious free-kick reminiscent of compatriot Lionel Messi.

There has been a lot of criticism coming the way of the Blues’ midfield so far this season. Whilst Gallagher has largely impressed the fanbase despite his uncertain future, the same cannot be said about record-signing Enzo and Moises Caicedo.

Whilst the former Benfica man has not shown the kind of consistency that one would expect of him, he has still performed rather well. It’s Caicedo who has disappointed since his high-profile transfer from Brighton and looks a pale shadow of his former imperious self.

After the game that Enzo and Gallagher had midfield, Pochettino conceded that he could not be happier for the duo as he feels that they deserved it. Pochettino considers the duo as ‘hard workers’

“I’m very happy with Enzo and Conor Gallagher. So happy because they deserve to feel this way, happy, enjoy playing football. These two work so hard to try to perform. I am so pleased with their performances”.

However, one swallow doesn’t really make a summer. One good performance might have been enough to retract the knives on Pochettino’s neck but the Argentine manager will know that it can only do so much. It’s up to the players to keep up the good form.

Enzo Fernandez stepped up in some fashion against Aston Villa

We all saw what Chelsea can do when they actually play well together. There is so much talent and potential in the team. Unfortunately, it takes three to four losses for us to see one impressive performance like the game against Villa.

Enzo Fernandez needs to ensure that he keeps up the good form in the upcoming games. When the Argentine World Cup winner plays well, the entire team seems to play well. If the Blues are to salvage the rest of the season, they need Enzo fit and firing.

One important thing for Pochettino though would be to revive the confidence of Caicedo. The Ecuadorian midfielder seems awfully out of sorts. We all know the potential he possesses and let’s hope he can rediscover his best level really soon.

My journey with the beautiful game began with the mesmerizing play of Lionel Messi, whose unparalleled skill turned me into a lifelong Barcelona fan and sparked my passion for football. Writing about football has been a refreshing cocktail of joy, and probably the most intoxicating yet, much like experiencing the 6-1 comeback live. Through my work, I hope to connect with readers who share a similar excitement and love for the game and offer a fresh perspective.
