Former Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho reflects on his first stint with the Blues; says he was hired to add more ‘personality’ to the club. The Portuguese boss shared his views while speaking on Rio Ferdinand Presents FIVE YouTube podcast. He said:
“What I felt was they needed a personality like mine in the sense of to tell the guys how good they were.”
Mourinho was talking to Rio Ferdinand and sports presenter Stephen Howson about his happening managerial career. Rio threw an interesting question at the Portuguese asking him about his glorious Chelsea days that lasted from 2004 to 2007.
Apart from the ‘personality factor’, Mourinho said the club was pretty sorted and he did not have to build anything at West London. This, in return, helped him hit the ground running. Mo’s Chelsea tenure marks one of the most glorious days in the club’s history. The Blues won back-to-back Premier League titles (2004/05, 2005/06) under him.
The 2004/05 season also saw Mourinho grab the EFL trophy, a feat he repeated in 2006/07. The same season, he also secured the FA Cup. The 2005 Community Shield was another feather on Jose’s cap.

The Portuguese named himself ‘The Special One’, a moniker celebrated very well by the media. However, his managerial tactics were quite unconventional and his personality, quite enigmatic.
There are players like Lampard, Ibrahimovic, and many others who share a close relationship with Mo. On the other hand, there are also players like Kaka, Casillas, Torres and many others who did not have a healthy bond with the Portuguese.
In short, Mourinho was never predictable, was he? We saw him win the Champions League with FC Porto and also play ‘park the bus’ style with an attacking-rich Chelsea.
Nevertheless, the former Real Madrid manager gave enough dramatic moments for the football fans to cherish forever. He returned to Chelsea for the 2013/14 season. He helped the team win the Premier League title and the EFL trophy in the 2014/15 season before bidding the final farewell.
