Pochettino claims Chelsea were bested by Liverpool during ‘massive celebration party’ at Anfield

Mauricio Pochettino insists the Chelsea defeat to Liverpool will be an experience rather than humiliation

Mauricio Pochettino was in full agreement that Liverpool deserved to win the match after the way Chelsea were picked apart by the Reds’ players in a 4-1 defeat. But he insisted that his players should see the defeat as an experience and learn from it because it would help them realise where they were at fault.

The defeat comes after Jurgen Klopp announced that he would step down as Liverpool coach by the end of the season, and it has come as a big blow for the Reds fans. But the win over Chelsea saw Anfield erupt in jubilation. The Stadium is a difficult place to go in normal circumstances let alone when they are keen to send a legendary manager off with a bang.

However, the West Londoners were also unlucky in the game when they weren’t given two penalties after fouls on Conor Gallagher and Christopher Nkunku. But the Argentine manager felt it was a merited win for the Reds, (h/t Mirror), and said:

“Do I worry? No. I think it was a game that was important for us to feel what it means to play against a team that was celebrating the farewell of their coach. It was a massive celebration party with positive energy for the team and full confidence.”

We deserved to lose because of the way we played and made many poor mistakes. Liverpool players were far better than us and were more motivated than us in the match. They had home supporters who were cheering for Klopp after he announced he would leave the club by the end of next season.

Klopp’s time at Liverpool is a lesson for any modern manager on how to rebuild a side that lacked identity and direction. He leaves Anfield a much better place than the one he inherited. We hope Pochettinot too goes on to have a similar impact at Stamford Bridge. However, if his first season is anything to go by, there is much work to be done.

But if we had been awarded those penalties then the outcome would have been different because the team wasn’t doing well we needed a bit of luck to change the dynamic of the match. The players are going to benefit from that loss and grow more aware of their own shortcomings. The goal of the Wolves game is to recover and demonstrate that the Liverpool loss hasn’t affected us.
