Chelsea signed Malang Sarr after the 2019/20 season. He joined the Londoners from OGC Nice on a free transfer. After signing for Chelsea he was sent on loan to Porto.
He came back to Chelsea hoping for some time to play under the tutelage of then-Chelsea manager Thomas Tuchel.
Malang Sarr made 21 appearances during the 2021/22 season but has found game time hard to come ever since. He has failed to play even a second of senior football at Chelsea since. This is pushing him for an exit from Stamford Bridge.
According to a report by The Athletic, Malang Sarr expressed his desire not to play in any youth fixtures at the start of the ongoing 2023/24 season. Malang Sarr is currently training with the Chelsea U21 squad. However, it is said that he was not feeling 100% which is why he indicated not to participate in any games with the academy squad but is now willing to play as he feels better.
Malang Sarr has remained professional throughout his time on the bench at Chelsea and hopes to stay fit enough to earn a move away from the Bridge.
Journalist Dean Jones speaking to GiveMeSport says that the reports of Sarr rejecting to play for the U21 come as disappointing but believes there is another side to the story.
He also indicated that there should be more to come on him. This is what Jones had to say:
“It’s a disappointing story. However, I think there are two sides to this, and I would be curious to hear the whole story from both angles. I find it very hard to believe that a player in his position would refuse to play because it wouldn’t benefit him long-term to be entirely out of the shop window.
“He’s frustrated about how his Chelsea career has panned out and that potential transfers haven’t worked out. He’s now stuck, which has probably left him slightly humiliated and embarrassed. So, from that sense, I can understand his frustrations. But I’d be astonished if that’s extended to him refusing to play for Chelsea. There’ll be more news to come on this. I don’t believe we can let his story continue without hearing more about the other side of it.”
The situation of Malang Sarr is disappointing. He looked really good when he was playing for Chelsea. With all the talent Chelsea have at the centre-back position, Sarr is down the pecking order and it will benefit all parties if he were to continue developing somewhere else.
