Injury update: Key US international’s ACL injury comes as a blow to Chelsea women’s title hopes

Chelsea women handed blow as Mia Fishel suffers ACL injury

Chelsea women have suffered another set back in their bid for Women Super League title as US international Mia Fishel has suffered an anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury on Monday.

Both, US Soccer team and Chelsea Women’s on their official website have confirmed that Mia Fishel has suffered an ACL injury. She will likely be on the sidelines for a long time. Maybe this is the last we see of her all year. We should have a better understanding of length of her injury once she undergoes surgery.

Mia Fishel has been away from Chelsea Women’s. She was with the US Women’s Soccer Team when she suffered her ACL injury on the right knee. US Women’s prepare for Concacaf W Golds Cup that is set to take place over the upcoming three weeks. The US Women’s will be calling up Alex Morgan as a replacement for Mia Fishel.

“I’m gutted for Mia, and I know the team and the entire staff is as well. She’s been very effective in camp and has worked hard to make an impact. Since she’s been getting call-ups to the National Team, she’s shown a tremendous growth mindset, a desire to absorb information and has been a total team player.” -Interim US coach Twila Kilgore said (US Soccer)

Mia Fishel joined Chelsea Women’s team last summer on a three year deal from Mexican club Tigres. She has only scored for Chelsea once in ten appearances under her belt.

This will be Chelsea’s second anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) in the last two months. Chelsea also lost Sam Kerr in January for a similar injury as she serves sidelines for atleast the conclusion of ongoing season and Emma Hayers’ tenure at the club.

Having lost two strikers in as many months to an injury that is ever growing in Women’s football, there will be massive pressure on Mayra Ramírez. The Colombian striker joined Chelsea last month on a four-and-a-half year deal by becoming the most expensive women transfer in history of Women’s football. She will have massive pressure on her shoulders to start scoring goals.
