Chelsea have made the surprising decision to put Robert Sanchez on the transfer list, just seven months after the Spanish goalkeeper joined the club from Brighton. Despite joining the Blues as part of an effort to rejuvenate the squad under Mauricio Pochettino’s management, Sanchez has seemingly fallen out of favour with the Chelsea hierarchy.
Sanchez was among the new arrivals at Stamford Bridge at the beginning of the season, with Chelsea looking to inject quality and youth into their squad. The departure of goalkeepers Edouard Mendy and Kepa Arrizabalaga paved the way for Sanchez to assume the role of the club’s first-choice goalkeeper, alongside Djordje Petrovic, who came on as his understudy.
However, a turn of events has seen Sanchez slip down the pecking order at Chelsea, with Petrovic seizing the opportunity to impress after seeing himself given a chance due to an injury to Sanchez. As a result, Chelsea are now planning to bring in another top-quality goalkeeper in the summer transfer window, potentially leaving Sanchez surplus to requirements. [Football London]
Sanchez’s fall from grace is evident, considering he started the season as Chelsea’s first-choice goalkeeper but now finds himself facing an uncertain future. With Petrovic establishing himself as a viable option between the posts, Sanchez’s prospects at Stamford Bridge have become increasingly uncertain.
Chelsea’s initial move for Sanchez came after a disagreement with his then-manager Roberto De Zerbi, which led to him being replaced in the Brighton goal by Jason Steele. Despite the interest Sanchez garnered during his time at Brighton, his reputation has taken a hit since his move to Chelsea, raising questions about his future in West London.
Only time will tell whether Chelsea will be able to recoup the significant £25m fee they paid for Sanchez or if they will opt to offload him to free up space and funds for their squad overhaul.
With Todd Boehly and Mauricio Pochettino looking to revamp the underperforming Chelsea team, Sanchez’s departure could be part of a broader restructuring plan aimed at improving the squad’s competitiveness.
