Chelsea Loan Watch: Ian Maatsen registers assist to help Borussia Dortmund win 3-0

Ian Maatsen comes up with pinpoint cross that helped Dortmund score their third goal

Chelsea‘s loan star Ian Maatsen displays his calibre with a fine assist against SC Freiburg in the Bundesliga. Maatsen set up Niclas Fullkrug for the third goal in the 87th minute. Borussia Dortmund won by 3-0 to maintain the fourth position on the table.

Julian Brandt’s corner was headed clear by SC Freiburg’s Lucas Holer. Brandt was at the receiving at once again before passing the ball to Maatsen. The Dutchman curled the ball into the box after spotting Niclas Fullkrug’s run into a dangerous position.

The pinpoint pass found Fullkrug’s head, who slotted it home for die Schwarzgelben. Niclas Fullkrug, the birthday boy who turned 31, stood out with two assists and a goal. Iaan Maatsen was subbed off right away to make way for Mateu Morey.

He had a fine game at the Signal Iduna Park, offensively and defensively. Chelsea scouts keeping an eye on the 21-year-old left-back should be happy with him.

Hit the ground running?

Ian Maatsen was loaned out by Chelsea during the last days of the January transfer window. The full-back has spent the majority of his time away from Stamford Bridge as a loanee. His last stint was with Burnley, where he played a crucial role in helping them earn a Premier League promotion.

Maatsen’s fine run-in form helped him earn a contract extension with Chelsea until 2026. The Blues offloaded the youngster to Dortmund for the remainder of the season, immediately after. The Netherlands defender earned a position in Edin Terzic’s starting XI right away.

He already has 448 minutes of playing time from five Bundesliga games as opposed to 199 minutes from 12 Premier League games. Chelsea is one of the top clubs in Europe that invests heavily in youth talents.

Considering Maatsen’s prowess and Chelsea’s ‘team rebuilding phase’, it is highly likely that the Dutchman will be a part of Chelsea’s future.
